The Foundation runs an annual competition for suggestions for improvements within the shipping industry. This suggestion competition is called ”20xx AWARDS” (xx = year of disbursement)
Submissions can be awarded a ”working award” or a ”development stipend”.
Submissions should be within the areas of safety, working environment or job satisfaction.
Submissions are accepted from active seafarers within Swedish shipping.
Submissions are accepted from Swedish seafarers employed by a Swedish company on a foreign registered ship.
Submissions are also accepted from persons with other direct connections to the above.
Submissions are to be forwarded to the Foundation’s office by October 31st each year.
Submissions are registered on arrival and a written confirmation of receipt is sent.
Submissions must be technically and ergonomically detailed, adequately motivated and accompanied by drawings, photographs or sketches. Considerable weight is attached during assessment to the result of any practical test.
Submissions are accepted in Swedish or in English and submissions received are judged by a special technical jury.
The jury group normally meets once a year, usually in January or February.
The Jury group judge submissions according to two main criteria:
- Suggestions that can be used in practise immediately = Working award
- Suggestions that require adjustment and development before being put into practice = Development stipend
The development stipend is paid out with one-third of the amount granted during the year of the award and the final two-thirds when the submission is completely developed. Stipends for Submissions not fully developed within five years are cancelled.
The Foundation wishes to bring attention to the fact that awards to the same individual over two consecutive years should be avoided as this may result in taxation issues.
A record of all Submissions awarded is maintained in the Foundation’s Awards register which is publically available for each respective year. Awards register.
